( dpa )- The UN Security Council condemned on Monday in the "strongest terms" an attempt on the life of East Timor President Jose Ramos-Horta and wished him a speedy recovery.

Ramos-Horta was flown to Australia immediately following the attack in East Timor's capital Dili in which rebel leader Major Alfredo Reinado, a fugitive since he escaped jail in August, 2006, was killed. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao escaped the attack uninjured.

"These represented an attack on the legitimate institutions of Timor-Leste," the council said in a statement, using the generic name of the island that became independent from Indonesia. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the attack.

"The Security Council calls on the government of Timor-Leste to bring to justice those responsible for this heinous act, and urges all parties to cooperate actively with the authorities in this regard," the statement said.

It urged all parties to resolve all disputes through political and peaceful means within their democratic institutions. It also reaffirmed support for the government in Dili.
