Spanish police have detained 54 suspected members of the Hispanic street gang Latin Kings, including its top leaders in the Madrid region, police said Wednesday.

The gang had remained under the orders of the Ecuadorian founder of the Spanish branch of Latin Kings, Eric Javier Velastegui, who continued giving orders from prison, according to police, dpa reported.

Velastegui is serving a 21-year prison sentence for a rape committed in 2003.

The detainees were arrested on suspicion of offences including violent robbery.

The Latin Kings gang was founded in the United States, but has spread to Latin America and Europe as well.

Those held in the Madrid region included the so-called Supreme Inca of the Sacred Tribe of America Spain.
