Muslims in Java protest "lenient" prosecution of alleged blasphemer

Hundreds of Muslims demonstrated in the Indonesian central province of Java Tuesday, demanding a harsher sentence for a man accused of blasphemy against Islam, Xinhua reported.

The mob set fire to two Christian churches and several vehicles, and pelted another church and a school with stones in Temanggung district.

The demonstration broke out when prosecutors in the trial of Antonius Richmond Bawengan requested a five-year prison sentence on charges of distributing printed material insulting to Islam.

The protestors stormed the district court room, demanding that the prosecution seek a the death penalty. The police used tear gas and fired warning shots as the demonstration spread to the surrounding area.

Bawengan is accused of distributing books and leaflets in October which describe the Black Stone, or al-Hajaru-l-Aswad, as resembling female genitals, according to Kompas.com online news service.

The stone is part of the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Islam's holiest site.

The unrest came two days after hundreds of radical Muslims stormed into a house where members of the Ahmadiyya sect were staying in the western Java district of Pandeglang, killing three people and injuring several others.
