Italian police on Wednesday arrested a fugitive mafia boss whose name appeared on a list of the country's 30 most-wanted criminals, media reports said.

The 49-year-old Giuseppe dell'Aquila was picked up in a villa in Varcaturo, north of Naples, DPA reported.

Suspected of heading the Contini and Mallardo crime family of the Camorra - the Neapolitan version of the mafia - Dell' Aquila had been on the run since 2002.

He has previous convictions for armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms.

Police came close to capturing Dell' Aquila in 2009 when he was on board a yacht anchored off Naples. But on that occasion he managed to escape by diving into the sea and swimming to shore.
