A US official met Wednesday with a Syrian diplomat to express "outrage" about the weeks-long shelling campaign against the city of Homs by the Syrian government, the US State Department said, dpa reported.

Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman and Syrian Charge d'Affaires Zuheir Jabbour held talks in Washington, in which the US expressed "our outrage over the month-long campaign of brutality and indiscriminate shelling of the city of Homs," the State Department said.

Syrian forces on Wednesday launched a ground offensive in the besieged city to capture the district of Baba Amr from rebel fighters after almost a month of shelling, activists said.

The US urged an end to the violence and compliance with an Arab League plan for a peaceful political transition in Syria.
