White House calls for "unified" action for Syrian transition

The White House said Wednesday that violence was not the answer to the situation in Syria, but that the window was closing to a peaceful solution, DPA reported.

The bombing in Damascus that killed the defence minister and other high-ranking officials showed the escalation of violence continuing every day, spokesman Jay Carney said.

"It only proves the point that we've been making, that the window is closing," he said. "We need to take action in a unified way to help bring about the transition that the Syrian people so deserve."

The US was continuing to pressure the Russian and Chinese governments, which blocked past efforts in the UN Security Council. President Barack Obama telephoned with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday to discuss issues including Syria, but Carney did not provide details of the conversation.
