Turkey accuses EU, Muslim world of hypocrisy over Gaza

Turkey's EU Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu lashed out at the West and the Muslim world for remaining silent over Israel's ongoing military operation in the Gaza Strip which claimed at least 279 lives.

The Israeli army launched a ground operation against the besieged Gaza Strip on Thursday, taking its 11-day military operation a step further.

At least 279 Palestinians mostly civilians including children, have been killed and around 2050 injured, said the Palestinian Health Ministry.

"We [Turkey ] curse Israel's atrocity," Cavusoglu said. "We are tired of your double standards, and hypocrisy," referring to the EU countries which he said were pretending to stand for democracy.

He accused the EU of ignoring the human rights of the Palestinian people violated by Israel and the civilian deaths.

He also slammed the Muslim world for remaining silent on the Israeli onslaught and said : "Where are the Muslim countries, what do they fear and why are they remaining silent?"

Israel's military operation, dubbed "Operation Protective Edge," is the third major offensive against the embattled Gaza Strip - home to some 1.8 million Palestinians - in the last six years.

Gaza-based resistance factions, for their part, have continued to fire rockets at Israel - some of which have reached Tel Aviv.
