Turkey didn't promise US to join sanctions against Iran: Erdogan

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 30

By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Turkey did not promise the United States to join the sanctions against Iran, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

He made the remarks commenting on the arrest of Turkish businessman of Iranian origin, Reza Zarrab, on charges of violating sanctions against Iran, Turkish media reported on Nov. 30.

Erdogan noted that the world does not consist of only the US, and Iran is an important economic partner.

In March 2016, Zarrab was arrested in the US for trying to circumvent sanctions against Iran. Zarrab resided in Turkey and had Turkish and Iranian citizenship.

As previously reported by the Turkish media, the government could not get any information about the arrested businessman, and the Turkish Foreign Ministry sent a note of protest to the US. The US recently responded to the note of protest and reported the exact location of Zarrab.

Zarrab admitted his guilt at a trial in New York on Nov. 29.
