The new airport in Istanbul served 12.3 million passengers from January through April 2020, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend.
During the reporting period, 3.1 million were served on domestic flights, and 9.2 million passengers on international flights.
The ministry noted that during this period, 87,856 flights were carried out through the new Istanbul airport, including 22,255 on domestic routes and 65,601 on international flights.
"From January through April 2020, the volume of freight traffic through the new Istanbul airport amounted to 366,392 tons, of which 29,503 accounted for domestic flights and 336,889 for international flights", the ministry said.
New Istanbul Airport served 52.5 million passengers in 2019.
The opening ceremony of the new airport was held in Istanbul on October 29, 2018. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Mehmet Cahit Turhan attended the ceremony.
Istanbul's third airport is located in the northern part of the city.
