Rescue work continues in the Azerbaijan city of Khirdalan to remove people under the rubble of a building that collapsed Sept. 8 following an explosion, Azerbaijani Deputy Emergency Situations Minister, Lieutenant-General Etibar Mirzayev told reporters.

He said 11 people have been rescued from the rubble. Among them there are two men, three women and six children.

"Of these persons, one man and one woman have died. Currently, the search is underway for one child," the deputy minister said.

He added that according to preliminary data, the explosion occurred on the second floor of the building as a result of a gas leak.

Earlier, Azerbaijan's Emergency Situations Ministry gave information about the rescue of nine people and removal of two dead bodies from the wreckage.

An explosion occurred in a five-story building in the city of Khirdalan of Azerbaijan's Absheron District, according to the information received by the 112 hotline in the early morning of Sept.8. Following the blast, a rescue team arrived at the scene.
