The Baku Court of Grave Crimes Jan.6 held a hearing on the case of Elshan Ismayilov, Jamal Mammadov, Arif Aliyev, Kanan Madatov and Samir Mustafayev, accused of the murder of Azerbaijani reporter Rasim Aliyev.
Rasim Aliyev, working for Ann.az website, was beaten and as a result, suffered multiple injuries on August 8. Aliyev died in a clinical medical center on August 9. Baku's prosecutor's office filed a criminal case under article 126.3 (intentional infliction of harm resulting in death of the injured person) and article 177.1 (theft) of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic.
The former captain of the Gabala football club Javid Huseynov was detained as a suspect in the murder of Rasim Aliyev. There were reasonable grounds to believe that Huseynov knew that his cousin Elshan Ismayilov was preparing a crime, but hid this information.
During the investigation, the materials of the criminal case regarding the football player Javid Huseynov were filed in a separate lawsuit under article 307.1 (not informing about known, prepared or committed heinous crimes) and article 307.2 (not promised covering up of a heinous crime) of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic.
A preparatory hearing was held under the chairmanship of judge Eldar Ismayilov, the indictment was read out.
At the meeting, the injured party's lawyers have applied to return the case for additional investigation and prosecute doctors that were treating the deceased as witnesses.
However, a motion to return the case for additional investigation was not satisfied, and the request to prosecute doctors as witnesses was left without consideration.
The next trial is scheduled for January 12.
