After the earthquake, Azerbaijani Embassy in Japan contacted with all Azerbaijani citizens temporarily living in Tokyo and found that none of them has injured, Azerbaijani ambassador to Japan Azer Huseynov told Trend.

"We can not be completely sure that none of the Azerbaijan citizens has injured, but at this time, all citizens, with whom we have contact, are safe," said the ambassador.

The ambassador said because of poor telephone and mobile phone communication, it is still impossible to contact with the Azerbaijanis living in other cities in Japan, but the embassy officials are trying to contact with them.

The Azerbaijani embassy in Japan has not yet received any information about the Azerbaijani citizens affected by earthquake, the ambassador told Trend earlier.

The Azerbaijani embassy is now working in emergency mode and if necessary, ready to render any assistance to fellow citizens, he said.

Huseynov said over 50 Azerbaijani citizens temporarily live and study in Japan, of them about 30 live in Tokyo and the rest in other cities.

A 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Japan's northeastern Honshu island Friday. The tremors were felt in Tokyo. The epicenter was located 382 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, its center lies at a depth of 10 kilometers. The siren was turned on in Tokyo warning about the beginning of a strong earthquake and a female voice calling for calm, in the case of the continuation and strengthening of aftershocks urged people to gather in specific locations.
The government of Japan reports about 23 dead.
