BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 13. The funds allocated for the construction of a railroad line from the city of Zahedan in Sistan and Baluchestan province, located in southeastern Iran, to the city of Mashhad in Khorasan Razavi province, located in the northeast, will increase to 20 trillion rials (about $477 million), Iran's Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and Executive Director of Iran's Transportation Infrastructure Construction and Development Company Khairullah Khademi said, Trend reports.

According to Khademi, 10 trillion rials (about $238 million) from the sale of Iranian crude oil will soon be used for the construction of the Zahedan-Mashhad railroad line.

Khademi added that all workshops for the construction of the 900-kilometer-long railway line have been activated, and contractors have started work.

The official noted that the Zahedan-Mashhad railroad line is considered one of the most important railroad corridors in the country. This railway line will carry 7.8 million tons of cargo from Chabahar port to countries located in Eurasia and will lead to the development of the east of the country.

Additionally, it should be noted that the current length of railway lines in Iran is 14,984 kilometers.

To note, a total of 1.57 million tons of products were transported by Iranian railroads in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024). Transit of Iran's products by rail increased by 10 percent compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023).
