ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 13. The fleet of Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ, national company) has transported about 73.5 million tons of coal within the country from May 1, 2023, through April 30, 2024, Trend reports.
KTZ reported that thermal power plants received 65.8 million tons of coal. This figure is up 910,000 tons from the same period of the last heating season. Thermal power station coal reserves hit 5.5 million tons for the first time in five years.
At the same time, 7.7 million tons of coal were transported for the population.
In 2023–2024, Kaztemirtrans JSC used circa 20,000 open wagons to carry coal, 10,400 of which were delivered to thermal power plants and 9,500 to the population.
Meanwhile, the volume of cargo transportation by rail in Kazakhstan amounted to 416.4 million tons from January through December 2023. This is 2.8 percent more than from January through December 2022.
At the same time, cargo turnover by rail for the above period amounted to 326.8 billion ton-kilometers, which is 4.8 percent more than in the same period in 2022.
