Georgia will begin issuing biometric passports April 15, Georgian Deputy Justice Minister Giorgi Vashadze said.

"Our citizens may apply for and obtain their passports from Apr.15. Biometric passports allow for simplified migration to EU countries. Citizens with these passports will receive visas in a maximum of 10 days for 35 euros," Vashadze said.

The biometric passports will be embedded with an electronic chip with information, their photo and their fingerprints.

The recorded information will be protected. The document will have a 99-percent guarantee from the state that the passport cannot be falsified.

Biometric passports are used in the EU, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Egypt and Kazakhstan.

Georgia will have three biometric passport production centers in Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi.

Biometric passports are issued for a period of 10 years and cost 100 lari (1.74 lari is $1).
