The earthquake and ensuing tsunami that hit Japan on Friday left 72,945 buildings destroyed or permanently unusable, the Kyodo news agency quoted the Interior Ministry as saying Monday.
The magnitude-9 earthquake had unleashed a massive wave that devastated large swathes of coastal land, including practically the entire port town of Minamisanriku, dpa reported.
