The blood clot that has sent US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to hospital is situated in a vein between her brain and skull behind the right ear, her physicians said Monday.

"It did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage," Drs Lisa Bardack and Gigi El-Bayoumi said. Clinton was described as in "good spirits" and engaging with "her doctors, her family and her staff."

Clinton was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday after the blood clot was discovered during a routine check up after a concussion she sustained several weeks ago, dpa reported.

"To help dissolve this clot, her medical team began treating the secretary with blood thinners," the doctors said in a statement.

"In all other aspects of her recovery, the Secretary is making excellent progress and we are confident she will make a full recovery," they said.

Clinton, 65, suffered the concussion this month when she fainted due to a stomach virus and dehydration, according to reports on December 15.

She had been recovering at home after canceling numerous appointments, but had recently been cleared to return to work. Clinton has experienced at least one other blood clot in the past.

Clinton had been travelling extensively in November and December after announcing she would step down, including farewell trips to Asia and Europe, and to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinians.

Last week US President Barack Obama nominated Senator John Kerry to replace Clinton as secretary of state. Kerry's nomination is to go before the Senate, which is expected to approve it.
