Ganja is the second largest city of Azerbaijan after Baku in area and population. It was called Yelizavetpol in the early 20th century, Kirovabad during the Soviet period. Its old name of Ganja was restored in 1989.

As a result of the research conducted by the specialists from the Archaeological Centre of Egypt, it was revealed that Ganja has existed for over four millennia. Ganja had the status of the capital of Azerbaijan for three months in 1918 when the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was formed.
