The opening ceremony of the first European Games was really grandiose, Sergey Bubka, president of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine (NOC), told Trend.
"This is a historical moment for the whole European continent," he said.
"The best conditions were created by Azerbaijan for the athletes," he said. "I sincerely congratulate the leadership of Azerbaijan, all citizens of the country. This is really a great contribution of all residents. They are hosting the first European Games with love, cordiality and hospitality."
The European Games kicked off in Baku June 12 and will last till June 28.
There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.
Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
