The current situation with regard to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is unacceptable, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said on Thursday during a meeting with the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.
At the meeting Mammadyarov informed the guest about the process of resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and about the fact that withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories will have a positive impact on the peace process. Mammadyarov stressed that there are economic development prospects of the region after the resolution of the conflict.
The meeting discussed the UNHCR's activity at international and regional levels. Guterres stressed that the Azerbaijani government has done considerable work to improve refugees' living conditions. He said he is very impressed with Azerbaijan's development and with the fact that the country has turned into a modern country.
During the meeting also views were exchanged on other issues of mutual interest.
