Mass arrests were carried out in the Turkish cities of Ankara and Istanbul as part of the fight against terrorism, Turkish channel TRT Haber said on Tuesday.

Operations for the arrests were carried out at 26 locations. Currently 23 people are reported arrested in Ankara and 62 in Istanbul.

Operations for arrests are being carried out as part of the fight against the mass unrests in several provinces of Turkey which began with strikes at Istanbul's Taksim Square, the channel reports.

The authorities have accused some of the rioters of having relations with terrorist and other prohibited groups.

Protests have been continuing in Turkey for more than 20 days. According to representatives of the authorities, the protests already have an anti-government character.

The Turkish opposition parties also accused the police of using excessive force against the protesters.

Earlier, the Interior Minister of Turkey said an investigation is being carried out in connection with the use of excessive force against the protesters.
