Dmitriy Medvedev to Visit   Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 5 March / Trend corr S. Agayeva/ The newly elected Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev will pay a visit to Azerbaijan. "He accepted an invitation from the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to pay an official visit to the country. I hope the visit will happen in near future," the Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasiliy Istratov said to journalists on 5 March.

The date for the visit has not yet been fixed.

On 2 March, Russia held presidential elections as a result of which Dmitriy Medvedev gained about 85% of the votes. Azerbaijan's President was one of the first to call Medvedev, to congratulate him and invite him to his country. "I am sure the beginning which was laid by telephone conversation between Aliyev and Medvedev will be fruitful for further expansion of bilateral cooperation," Istratov said.

According to the Ambassador, Medvedev has been to Azerbaijan and has good relations with the country. The direction of bilateral cooperation will continue during the new President's term of office.
