Azerbaijani Pro-governmental Bloc Nominates its Candidate to Presidential Post

Azerbaijan, Baku, 6 June / Trend corr. I.Alizade / The Consultative Assembly, which represents pro-governmental parties of Azerbaijan in the upcoming presidential elections, will support the candidature of the incumbent President Ilham Aliyev. "The parties, united in the Consultative Assembly, support the policy of the current authorities and will second the candidate from the ruling party in the forthcoming presidential elections," MP Mubariz Gurbanli, Chairman of the Consultative Assembly, told Trend .

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held in October 2008. The ruling New Azerbaijan party will nominate the candidature of Ilham Aliyev.

The Assembly was founded with an aim to support a candidate from the authorities in 1998. The organization unites the ruling New Azerbaijan party (NAP), Ana Vatan, Social Welfare, Democratic Enlightenment, Republicans, Democratic World of Azerbaijan, National Statehood parties and Alliance For Azerbaijan.

Gurbanli stated that the parties represented in the Consultative Assembly would take a decision to support the candidate from NAP in the meetings. "The parties will hold meetings and to take decision to support the candidate from the ruling party after the presidential elections will be started," Gurbanli said.
