Opposition Bloc Member to Join Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku, 13 June / corr. Trend E.Babayev / A statement by oppositional bloc Azadlig to boycott the upcoming elections is not supported by all members of the bloc. "I am in favor of participation in the elections," Qulamhuseyn Alibeyli, the chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Azerbaijani Popular Front Party, told to Trend on 13 June.

The presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan on 15 October. The Musavat Party has nominated Isa Gambar, its chairman, Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP) - Sardar Jaliloglu and the Green Party - Mais Gulaliyev, its chairman. Eldar Namazov, a political scientist, stated that he would participate independently in the elections. The ruling New Azerbaijan Party will nominate Ilham Aliyev, the current Azerbaijani President. Azadlig bloc, uniting three oppositional parties (the Popular Front, the Civil Development and the Liberal), intends to boycott the elections.

According to Alibeyli, the statement to boycott the election will be discussed at the Assembly of the bloc within next few days. "The presence of different opinions is natural. I am in favor of participation in the elections and I will ground my position in my speech to the Assembly. At the moment, I am not going to speak about it," he said.
