Azerbaijan, Baku, 10 Dec / Trend corr A. Huseynbala / About 1,500 signatures of electors have been collected for the rehabilitation of the proportional election system in Azerbaijan.
"Members of the initiative group, which is intended to rehabilitate the proportional election system, appealed to twelve different parties approving this initiative," Vahid Nazarov, member of the group and deputy chairman of Liberal Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (LDPA), told Trend on 10 Dec.
By 2002, parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan had based on the mixed election system including majority and proportional. A referendum, held in connection with changes made in the Constitution of the country in 2002, liquidated proportional election system and elections were held fully on majority system.
In November 2008, the opposition LDPA formed an initiative group on rehabilitation of proportional electoral system which includes 55 members. The current group offers all existing parties in Azerbaijan to join the campaign on collecting signatures for restoration of proportional election system.
If the current initiative gets boost, about 600,000 votes of electors will be collected and submitted to the Central Election Commission. After the approval, the commission will direct them to the Parliament to rehabilitate the proportional election system.
Some MPs from the ruling New Azerbaijan Party also support this initiative.
According to Nazarov, following the completion of consultations, a round table will be held at the end of December with participation of political parties which support the current initiative.
"We have already launched the campaign on collection of signatures. As far as I know, the parties supporting this initiative are also holding the current campaign," Nazarov said.
According to Nazarov, Musavat and Adalat are among the parties supporting the initiative of the Liberal Democratic Party of Azerbaijan to restore the proportional system.
