Kai Eide seeks deals between Central Asia and Afghanistan

Afghanistan, Kabul, Jan. 26 / Trend , A. Hakimi/    The UN's Special Representative for Afghanistan, Kai Eide has been meeting with top officials in Tajikistan to explore further co-operation between Afghanistan and the Central Asian country.

In the last two days Mr. Eide met with the Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi and senior officials dealing with agriculture, energy and counter-narcotics.

"It is important to explore opportunities for close co-operation between Afghanistan and its neighbors.

I see real opportunities and hope very much that these opportunities can be built upon," said Eide.

Mr. Eide noted he was "well received" in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe and that there were "positive signs of willingness" for greater engagement with Afghanistan.

In recent weeks he has also visited Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Afghanistan and Tajikistan have signed a number of bi-lateral agreements on a variety of issues in the past.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) which Mr. Eide heads, has a mandate to support regional co-operation in working for a more stable and prosperous Afghanistan.

Is should be mentioned that after coalition logistical conveys attacked by Taliban led forces in Pakistan, NATO showed tendency to be supplied through Russia, and may Eide support this policy in his trip to northern Afghan neighboring country.
