Georgian foreign ministry disseminates information on country's withdrawal from CIS

Georgian Foreign Ministry disseminated information regarding country's withdrawal from the CIS.

"In August 2008, member of CIS - Russia - carried out military aggression against other member country of CIS - Georgia, occupied territories of Georgia, carried out ethnic cleansing and recognized puppet regimes established in the occupied territories. There must be emphasized the involvement of Russian military units, located in Abkhazia, in the military aggression against Georgia.  

Based on the above-mentioned, Georgia has decided to withdraw from the CIS.

On August 14, 2008, the Georgian Parliament adopted a resolution ceasing operation of the agreement on the establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States, legalized on 8 December 1991, Charter of the Commonwealth of Independent States approved on 22 January 1993 and the Agreement on creation of Economic Union dated 24 September 1993.

On August 18, 2008 the Foreign Ministry of Georgia notified the CIS Executive Committee of this resolution of Parliament.

Georgia confirms its readiness to develop bilateral cooperation with member countries on the basis of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation, universally recognized principles and norms of international law, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in domestic affairs," Foreign Ministry of Georgia said.
