Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov has been invited to visit Iran for an international conference on combating terrorism "concerning the entire international community", the Turkmen government said on Thursday.

Berdimuhammadov thanked his Iranian counterpart for the invitation.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad held a telephone conversation a day earlier on initiative from Tehran. The presidents "reaffirmed a commitment to establishing partnerships to ensure global peace, security, stability, and combating threats and challenges facing the modern world."

Views were exchanged on the current state and prospects for Turkmen-Iranian cooperation and a number of issues were discussed of mutual interest in regional and international policies.
Iran and Turkmenistan have a long common territorial border, and are also Caspian Sea neighbors.
