Deputy Minister: Not only prisoners but also correctional facilities’ employees to be able to vote in forthcoming presidential election in Azerbaijan

Not only prisoners, who are being held in correctional facilities, but also employees and servicemen working in those facilities will be able to vote in the forthcoming election in Azerbaijan, Deputy Justice Minister of Azerbaijan Azer Jafarov said on Tuesday.

Not only prisoners, who are being held in correctional facilities, but also employees and servicemen working in those facilities will be able to vote in the forthcoming election in Azerbaijan, Deputy Justice Minister of Azerbaijan Azer Jafarov said on Tuesday.

He made the remarks at the Central Election Commission (CEC) during his speech on "The role and directions of activity of justice authorities (bodies of state registration of civil status acts, notaries, State registry of legal acts, investigative isolation wards and correctional facilities) in the election process", at specialized courses on suffrage for the representatives of District Election Commissions (DEC).

According to Jafarov, the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan, Central Election Commission and District Election Commissions are carrying out an interconnected activity for provision of electoral rights of the persons, who are being held in investigative isolation wards, suspects, as well as, the prisoners serving sentences.

The deputy minister noted that the presidential candidates and their authorized representatives are allowed to meet with prisoners in correctional facilities.

Conditions will be created for the media outlets to observe the process of prisoner's voting in correctional facilities on the election day, the Deputy Minister added.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled to be held in Autumn 2013.
