Russia does not rule out modernization of the Azerbaijani Gabala Radar Station intended to improve its detection abilities in case of a military-political decision regarding the station's operation, Russian media quotes ВВС Russia.
The Daryal Radar Station included into the Missile Attack Warning System keeps a defined part of outer space under constant control. The station is intended to detect land and sea ballistic missiles in space, their parameters of motion, and inform higher control units of the detected objects.
The Daryal station is capable of detecting launching of ballistic missiles from Middle East countries, as well as from the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. The territory monitored by the station consists of some 6,000 km.
In the time of the Iranian-Iraqi war, the Gabala Radar Station opportunely detected over 150 launchings of Skad operative-tactical missiles. In January 2007, the station detected test launchings of Shahab-3 missiles from the Iranian Hamadan target ground.
