Detained Azerbaijani Azadlig Newspaper Journalist to be Sent to Medical Centre

Azerbaijan, Baku, 5 February / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Mirza Sakit, the detained journalist of the Azadlig newspaper of Azerbaijan, will be sent to the medical centre. Sakit made the request due to his poor health, Rafael Mehtiyev, the chief of Central Health Department, stated to trend on 5 February.

According to Mehtiyev, the prisoner is to be transported to the medical centre in the near future.

Sakit launched a hunger strike on 26 January with demands that he be sent to the medical centre. On 28 January, once his demand was approved, Sakit terminated the hunger strike. The centre then made the decision to examine Sakit in the prison instead. So, on 3 February, Sakit began his hunger strike once again. Sakit has not stopped his hunger strike as his demand to transport him to medical centre has been approved.

Azadlig newspaper journalist is accused of contravening Article 234.1 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment. The Appeal and Supreme Courts maintained that the sentence be in force.

Three journalists have been held due to their professional activity in Azerbaijan.
