National Television and Radio Council of Azerbaijan (NTRC) asked the court to suspend execution of the lawsuit by public union Legal enlightenment of young people of Sumgayt against the NTRC.

During the trial process, the NTRC representative appealed to the court with this petition, a source at the National Council told Trend on June 16.

The petition was discussed at Baku Economic Court 1, and the trial was postponed to June 24 to consider the petition.

In January this year, public union Legal enlightenment of young people of Sumgaytasked the NTRC for obtaining a license to open a local TV channel in the city of Sumgait.

The public union accuses Nushiravan Maharramli of creating bureaucratic obstacles to the development of regional channels.

The union says that one television channel in Sumgayt, with a population of half a million people, is a very low rate. In this regard, the union made an initiative to create a second channel in Sumgayt and for this purpose, collected signatures of 5,000 people.

In response, the NTRC said that currently there is no necessity to open a new channel in Sumgayt.
"The creation of a new TV channel in any region is possible only through the contest," director of NTRC legal department, Nemyat Javadov told Trend .

According to Javadov, the State Commission on Radio Frequencies presented the list of frequencies to the NRTC.

"If necessary, the NRTC will announce competitions for these frequencies," said director of the department.

Javadov said that no frequency with respect to Sumgayt was presented to the Council.

"Even if it would be presented, the contest is held only when necessary. Currently one TV channel operates in Sumgayt, but there are regions where there are no local television channels. In such issues, NTRC conducts a balanced policy," said Javadov.
