The OSCE Special Representative on Freedom of the Media, Miklos Haraszti, has appreciated the establishment of the State Media Support Fund under the Azerbaijani President, the Head of Presidential Administration Socio-Political Department, Ali Hasanov told journalists on Sept. 10.
"Yesterday's meeting with Miklos Haraszti focused on prospects of adopting the Law on Defamation in Azerbaijan, as well as establishing the State Media Support Fund and holding a grant competition for them. Haraszti has appreciated the establishment of the fund," he said.
Hasanov said they also discussed the actual situation with the media. "We touched on the topics that worried him. He expressed a particular concern on the arrest of the two journalists," he said.
The head of the Presidential Administration Department said there are no reasons for concern about this situation, as it corresponds to the law of Azerbaijan.
In general, the current situation with media in Azerbaijan was assessed normally, said the head of the Presidential Administration Department. Hasanov said they also mentioned some problems in this area and the importance of Azerbaijan's joint activities with the OSCE and the international European institutions in this direction.
