Prosecutor demands toughened penalty for residential building explosion in Azerbaijan

A prosecutor's appeal was reviewed to toughen the sentence of two men who set off a blast in a residential building that resulted in the deaths of three people.

A prosecutor's appeal was reviewed to toughen the sentence of two men who set off a blast in a residential building that resulted in the deaths of three people.

The Baku Appeals Court held a preliminary review of the appeal against Elman Niftaliyev and Rashad Shikhmammadov who set off the explosion in a five-story residential building in Baku.

The court will consider the case Dec. 24.

The Nizami District Prosecutor's Office wants Niftaliyev to be sentenced to eight years in prison, and Shikhmammadov to five years. However, the Nizami District Court earlier sentenced Niftaliyev to 2.5 years in prison, and Shikhmammadov to a one-year suspended sentence.

Three people died in the explosion Dec. 13, 2008 .

Niftaliev was charged with Article 124.2 (Negligence Resulting in Murder) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code.
