ZANGILAN, Azerbaijan, May 30. A declaration of intent has been signed between the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Trend reports.
The document was signed today during the 3rd International Conference on Mine Action, themed "Mitigating Environmental Impact of Landmines: Resource Mobilization for Safe and Green Future" in Zangilan.
The Declaration of Intent includes cooperation on the establishment of a Center of Excellence in connection with mine action activities on the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The document was signed by the Chairman of the Board of the Agency, Vugar Suleymanov, and the Acting Resident Representative of the UN Development Program in Azerbaijan, Alessandra Roccasalvo.
The Center will nationally, regionally and internationally provide mine countermeasure training, certification and knowledge transfer, and promote mine countermeasures research and innovation to improve technologies and methodologies for humanitarian mine action.
The establishment of the Center is an indication of Azerbaijan's intention to enhance its capabilities in combating the mine threat and contribute to global efforts for a mine-free world.
This initiative reflects Azerbaijan's commitment to peace, security and sustainable development, regional and global cooperation in accordance with national and international aspirations.
To note, the 3rd International Humanitarian Demining Conference is attended by over 300 delegates from 75 countries.
The participants include high-ranking officials from various countries, senior UN headquarters staff, representatives of reputable international organizations and demining centers from different countries, as well as officials from accredited diplomatic missions in Azerbaijan.
