BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 12. On August 9, the International Dialogue for Environmental Action (IDEA) public association conducted a traditional cleanup event along the Kura riverbank, Trend reports.

Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, the event took place on the section of the Kura river flowing through Neftchala district.

The cleanup saw participation from 30 volunteers, local youth, and community representatives. Equipped with necessary supplies and special boats, the volunteers removed household waste, synthetic fishing nets—responsible for mass fish kills—and other illegal fishing tools that hinder fish development. Approximately half a ton of waste was collected and transported to the Neftchala district landfill. The participants also educated local residents about the river’s pollution, the harmful effects of illegal fishing gear on the environment, and the fauna of the Caspian Sea and the Kura river.

The primary goal of this initiative is to clean the Caspian Sea and other water bodies of materials that obstruct fish development and to prevent pollution and littering of the Kura river banks. The campaign also aims to raise public awareness about the importance of maintaining cleanliness in coastal areas and the impact of discarded waste on the river and the Caspian Sea's fauna.

Studies indicate that the increasing amount of domestic and industrial waste entering rivers contributes to the decline in fish growth in the Kura river and the Caspian Sea. In response, the IDEA regularly organizes such cleanup activities on the Caspian coast, including the Kura riverbanks, to preserve, enhance, and conserve the Caspian Sea's bioresources.

These routine cleanup efforts are crucial for mobilizing society to protect natural ecosystems, restore ecological balance, improve environmental conditions, and foster a culture of environmental stewardship.

IDEA extends its gratitude to all the nature enthusiasts who participated in the campaign and encourages everyone to support environmental initiatives and keep our shores clean.
