Georgian State Minister to meet with Ahiska Turks residing in Azerbaijan

During the official visit to Azerbaijan from 29 January to 1 February, the Georgian State Minister on the resolution of conflicts, the chairman of the state commission on study of issues of repatriation, Georgiy Khaindrava, along with the Azerbaijani officials he will also meet with Ahiska Turks residing. The chairman of the Vatan Society of Ahiska Turks in Azerbaijan, Ibrahim Burkhanov, said that the meeting will be held in Nasimi village of Saatly District on 31 January.

According to Burkhanov, the Minister will hold consultations on the repatriation of Ahiska Turks deported from Georgia in 1940s. In this respect Suleyman Barbakadze, the President of the international society of Ahiska Turks Vatan based in Moscow, arrived in Baku on Friday, Burkhanov stressed.

On 24 January the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe discussed Resolution 1415 on the fulfillment of Georgias commitments, in particular, in regard to population of Mesheti, which commits the Georgian authorities to established urgently the administrative and political conditions for the commencement of the repatriation of Ahiska Turks in order to complete it by 2011.

At the resolution 6279 of the State Defense Committee of the former USSR, dated 31 July 1944 the Ahiska Turks (over 92,000) from the Akhaltskalaki, Aspinds and Adigen districts bordering with Georgia were deported to the Middle Asia.
