Head of World Health Organization Visits    Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 January / corr. Trend S. Babayeva/ Margaret Chan, the General Manager of the World Health Organization (WHO) paid a two-day visit to Baku, the representation of WHO in Baku said on 30 January. It is the first visit of Dr. Chan to Azerbaijan as a head of the Organization.

Dr. Chan's visit aims to discuss mechanisms for enhanced cooperation between WHO and its Azerbaijani representation.

The WHO head is scheduled to meet with Ogtay Shiraliyev, the Minister of Public Health of Azerbaijan and to take part in the opening ceremony of the Center for Control of Emergency Situations at the Ministry of Public Health of Azerbaijan which was established with the support of WHO and World Bank. The WHO head is expected to visit several medical institutions of Azerbaijan.

Margaret Chan is from the Peoples Republic of China and was conferred the Diploma of Doctor at West Ontario University of Canada. She was appointed the Minister of the Public Health of Hongkong in 1994. Chan began her activity in WHO as a Director of the Department for the Environment Protection. Chan was appointed to the post of the General Manager of WHO on 9 November 2006. Her term of General Manager will terminate in June 2012.
