BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 7. AGerman Rhenus Group logistics company aims to establish a small but effective terminal network at key junctions in Uzbekistan, a source from the company told Trend.
“We recently signed a memorandum of cooperation with Uzbekistan Railway and Uztemiryulkonteyner, a subsidiary of Uzbek Railways, to establish joint ventures aimed at operating and expanding combined railroad terminals in important locations such as Andijan and Samarkand to further the development of existing transshipment facilities in Uzbekistan,” the source said.
The company envisions these terminals as integral components of the Middle Corridor to Western Europe via the Caspian Sea and Istanbul, linking up with trains between Istanbul and the Ruhr region, according to the source. With their strategic location in the strongest economic regions of Uzbekistan, the terminals may serve as connections to trade flows via the border crossings at the Chinese border in Kazakhstan and, in the middle future, via Osh-Kashgar.
"These initiatives reflect our commitment to strengthening Uzbekistan's transport infrastructure, increasing rail freight traffic, and positioning it as a hub for regional and international trade," the source from Rhenus noted.
Meanwhile, Uzbekistan transported 2.7 million tons of transit cargo from January through March 2024. During this period, the volume of transported goods by rail was 2.2 million tons, and by road it was 536,000 tons.
