(dpa) - Energy ministers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are to meet in the Zambian capital Lusaka on Thursday to mitigate the current energy crisis in the region, reports said Friday.

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa said the meeting had been prompted by a spate of power outages, not only in Zambia but in the entire region.

Mwanawasa has ordered the meeting in his capacity as SADC chairman amid concerns that the region might inevitably plunge into recession as a result of the power outages.

Speaking on arrival from Antananarivo, Madagascar, Mwanawasa said he was greatly perturbed by the spate of outages adversely affecting production in all aspects of the economy.
