Georgia, Tbilisi, Aug.17 / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /
Georgia will have to increase grain imports due to poor harvest, because the country has the lowest harvest of wheat in 2009, compared to the recent years, President of the Association of Wheat Producers, Arkadiy Mekerishvili, said on Aug.17.
With this regard Georgia will have to increase imports of grain even insignificantly, Mekereshvili added.
Drought destroyed 60 percent of wheat in Kakheti. Farmers are in a very difficult situation and I do not know how they will cope with the damage. Wheat harvesting is still ongoing in Kartli and the situation is better as compared to the Kakheti region, although the final results are still to be made, Mekerishvili said.
Domestic wheat production covers only 20 percent of the country demands.
