The Kontur Azerbaijani architectural company won an international tender to design a railway station in Akhalkhalaki in the framework of a Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway project.

The Kontur Azerbaijani architectural company won an international tender to design a railway station in Akhalkhalaki in the framework of a Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway project.

Under the tender terms, the Akhalkalaki station's construction must be coordinated with the Marabda-Akhalkalaki and Akhalkalaki-Kartsakhe railway station projects. Akhalkalaki's technical capacity will be 5 million tons. The capacity will increase to 15 million tons.

The tender also assumes designing infrastructural facilities for cargo and passenger services, telecommunications, signals, centralization and blocking systems, as well as a power supply station.

The Akhalkalaki construction is scheduled to start in 2010 and end in 2011.

A new 105-kilometer branch railroad as part of the BTK railway is planned to be constructed. Seventy-six kilometers will run through Turkey, and 29 kilometers through Georgia.
