Korea Cooperation launches development of feasibility study for irrigation project in Azerbaijan

Korea International Cooperation Agency KOICA has launched a complete design and development of a feasibility study (FS) project to improve the Absheron main canal for irrigation and modernization of facilities for receiving water from northern rivers, the Azerbaijani representation of KOICA said on Friday.

The first meeting on the beginning of this process took place in "Irrigation and Water Management" on Friday.

An executor of the project, the Korean Corporation Engineering consulting KECC presented a working plan at the meeting, as well as the directions and goals of the project. Discussions on getting a good result, determining the most appropriate ways for cooperation between Azerbaijan and Korea were held at the meeting.

The project covers the river basins in Gusar (6 hectares), Absheron main canal (73 kilometers). The project budget is $3,4 million, period of implementation is defined for two years (2009-2010).

The project involves the examination of the most optimal methodology of irrigation for Azerbaijan, conducting complete design of the Absheron main canal and installation of facilities for water in the northern rivers, organizing training programs for government officials and specialists in Azerbaijan, and providing with the appropriate electronic equipment (computers, printers and other).

KOICA's main purpose is to strengthen cooperation with developing countries and promote mutual exchange, support for economic and social development in these countries, thereby creating conditions for international development cooperation.

KECC in cooperation with KOICA shares its experience with the countries having shortage of irrigation system, as well as proposing training programs at the second level, implements projects to prepare feasibility studies and full design.
