Ashgabat, Beijing sign intergovernmental documents

Ashgabat and Beijing signed a number of intergovernmental documents after the talks held today between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov and member of Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, Secretary of the Parliament’s Central Commission on disciplinary affairs He Guoqiang.

Ashgabat and Beijing signed a number of intergovernmental documents after the talks held today between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov and member of Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, Secretary of the Parliament's Central Commission on disciplinary affairs He Guoqiang.

According to official Turkmen sources, the sides agreed to expand cooperation in the economic sphere.

The visit program of the high-ranked delegation from China includes meetings in the Majlis (parliament), with representatives of Chinese companies operating in Turkmenistan, as well as participation in the work of the business forum June 19.

According to the national broadcaster Altin Asyr, priority directions of the partnership are a fuel-energy sector, transport, communications and cultural exchange.

China has recently intensified its activities in Central Asia. The total trade turnover with Turkmenistan in 2009 amounted to almost half a billion dollars, this figure increased almost in 40 times compared to 2000.

A significant progress is related with the already implemented major project to construct a gas pipeline to China from eastern Turkmenistan through fields of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. In late 2009, China began import of the Turkmen gas under long term contract.

In Turkmenistan, there are 37 enterprises with Chinese capita, 57 investment projects involving Chinese companies worth more than $ 4 billion and nearly 2.5 billion yuan have been registered.

China is represented in the projects in the spheres of oil and telecommunication, transport, agriculture, textile, chemical and food industries, construction.
