Cargo transportation increases in Azerbaijani transport sector

According to the State Statistics Committee, in January-May, the transport sector of Azerbaijan  transported 76,4 million tons of cargo, or 3 percent more than in January-mayay 2009, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said.

About 72.5 percent of the total cargo transported in January-May falls to the private sector. In January-May about 49.1 percent of the total volume of goods were transported by road transport, 33.3 percent - by pipelines, 11.6 percent - by train and six percent - by maritime transport.

Of the total amount earned in January-May of goods 72.5 per cent is for the private sector. In January-May of the total volume of goods transported 49.1 percent of road transport, 33.3 per cent - through pipelines, 11.6 per cent - Train and six per cent - by sea.

In January-May, about 537.3 million people were transported by passenger transport, or 3.4 percent more than the same period last year. Most of the passengers transported by road transport (84.8 percent) and metro (14.7 percent).

About 8.9 million tons of various cargoes were transported by railway. It is 6.5 percent more than the same figure of January-May 2009.

About 4.6 million tons of various cargoes were transported by maritime transport. It is 10.4 percent less than the same period last year. The total volume of transported cargo accounted for international operations. The volume of cargo handled at ports in Azerbaijan in January-May totaled 4 million tons, or 1.8 times more than in January-May 2009.

About 37,5 million tons of cargo, or 6.7 percent more than in January-May last year were transported by cars. The volume of passenger traffic totaled 455.9 million (increased by 7.4 percent). About 96.4 percent of passengers were transported by bus and 3.6 percent - by cars.

The number of passenger transported by subway was 78.8 million and decreased by 14.3 percent.

About 338,100 passengers were transported by air compared to 441,300 for the same period last year.

About 16.4 million tons of cargo, or 6.8 percent more than the same period last year were transported via the Eurasian transport corridor through the territory of Azerbaijan in January-April this year. About 66.7 million people were transported within the corridor in January-April, or 7.9 percent more than in January-April 2009.
