Uzbekistan, Tashkent, Aug. 24 / Trend D.Azizov /

The Uzbek State Geology and Mineral Resources Committee may announce a tender to develop copper deposits in the Navoi region later this year, an inside committee source told Trend.

As part of the tender, a public auction will be held on the rights to use the site in Zhengeldinsk in the North Bukantau Mountains in the Navoi region. The site has estimated reserves of roughly 600,000 tons of P2-category copper and 50,000 tons of molybdenum.

The winner will receive a license to use the subsoil for five years.

Earlier the tender was scheduled for the first quarter of 2010. However, the timing has been adjusted due to volatile global markets.

Uzbekistan develops copper and porphyry deposits in the Tashkent region. The Almalyk Steel Company, the country's only copper producer, develops the Kalmakyr and Sarah-Ceku copper and porphyry ore deposits with total reserves of some 17 million tons of copper. Roughly 20 percent have been explored.
