Uzbekistan complets project to modernize fleet of diesel locomotives

Uzbekistan has completed a project to modernize the fleet of the diesel locomotives of the Uzbekistan Railways State JSC worth $54 million, JSC reported on Thursday.

Uzbekistan has completed a project to modernize the fleet of the diesel locomotives of the Uzbekistan Railways State JSC worth $54 million, JSC reported on Thursday.

The project worth $181 million envisages modernizing 208 locomotive sections owned by the Uzzheldorremmash production unit (subsidiary of JSC), as well as modernizing foundry workshops with a capacity of 25,200 tons of castings per year.

The project is financed by an EBRD loan in amount of $68 million and own funds Uzbekistan Railways.
In May 2005 the Russian Transpromresurs won the tender on one of the lots of the project on Modernization of diesel locomotives and reconstruction of foundries.

In December 2007, Transpromresurs and "Uzbekistan Railways signed a contract for the modernization of the fleet of diesel locomotives worth $54 million. Under the contract, the Russian company delivered a turnkey diesel generator sets with auxiliary equipment for the replacement of 90 sections of in-use diesel locomotives.

As formerly reported, by 2014, Uzbekistan intends to implement a program of development and modernization of the railway industry worth more than $1.734 billion.

In general, it is planned to implement 18 projects for construction and modernization of railways and infrastructure.
