Toyota Motor Corp said Wednesday it would recall 105,784 Prius cars in Japan and overseas over a problem with its steering gearbox, DPA reported.

The recall involves Prius models manufactured from 1997 to 2003, including 47,784 units in Japan, 52,000 in the United States, 1,200 in Britain and 800 in Germany, a company spokeswoman said.

In Japan, Toyota received 28 reports of the defect but the carmaker was not aware of any injuries related to the problem, she said. It was looking into whether there are any reports overseas.

The carmaker also recalled iQ small vehicles, some 22,000 units sold in Japan and 12,000 overseas including Britain, she said.
