In January-August 2011, the share of payments of indirect taxes in total tax revenues in Azerbaijan was 29.4 percent, the head of the state registration of commercial entities and economic analysis department of the Taxes Ministry Natig Shirinov said at a seminar for journalists "Tax system of independent Azerbaijan".

"In 2010 the figure was 40.1 percent. As you know, the lower the share of revenues from indirect taxes, the better the country's tax system works," said Shirinov.

He said the tax burden in Azerbaijan in 2009 amounted to 11.6 percent, in 2010 - 10.3 percent, and in January-August 2011 - 11.9 percent.

According to chief of tax policy and strategic studies department of the Taxes Ministry Akif Musayev, since Azerbaijan re-gained its independence, that is, over the past 20 years, the number of taxes in the country has fallen from 13 to nine. According to him, before the VAT rate ranged from 28-32 percent (currently 18 percent), income tax - 12-55 percent (14-30 percent).

"Today, more than 1.2 million declarations is received by the Ministry in on-line form, which makes up more than 90 percent of the total number of submitted declarations," said Musayev.

The seminar for journalists was held Sept. 23-24 at the Training Centre of the Taxes Ministry in Shamakhi district. Training Centre was commissioned in September 2011.
