Azerbaijan ranks third after Iraq and Syria among sugar beet importers from Turkey, the Anadolu news agency reported on Wednesday with the reference to the establishment on sugar production regulation.
Sugar beet export to Azerbaijan amounted to 5 thousand tons in 2011. The greatest volume of sugar beet was exported to Iraq (50 thousand tons) and to Syria (16 thousand tons).
293.8 thousand hectares of land have been planted by sugar beet in 2011. Record amount of sugar beet have been produced in Turkey last year - 16.2 million tons.
According to the resource, 2.2 million tons of sugar was produced from 15.5 million tons of sugar beet in 2011.
